Howard Lake Herald, (MN) 24 July 1947: Clara Kemper Tufford passed away at her home Friday morning at 3 o’clock, July 18th after an illness of several months. Death was not unexpected by those closely associated with her, as she had been gradually growing weaker for several days, and it was in keeping with the life that led up to it-quiet, simple, patient and unobtrusive, with self-denial and lack of claim upon others. No trail, no weakness, no entanglement of circumstances was ever sufficient cause for complaint and in this she has left for those whom she knew a rich inheritance, a guiding star for their future. Mrs. Tufford graduated from the local high school and for a number of years taught in the public schools of Minnesota and North Dakota. After World War I she was employed in Minneapolis by the Federal Board of Vocational Education for one and one half years. She was married May 19, 1920 to George F. Tufford, who survives her.She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. J. M. Walton of Sacramento, Calif., who was with her at the time of her death. She became a member of the Church of Christ when 16 years of age, and was a loyal and faithful member until her death. Her services were limited only by her physical strength. Funeral services were conducted from the Church of Christ, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. by Rev. Cachiaras and she was laid to rest beside her mother and father in the local cemetery. Card of Thanks-We wish to express our sincere thanks to all the relatives, friends and neighbors who assisted us in so many ways during the illness and passing of our beloved sister, Clara Tufford. For the many acts of consideration and kindness shown her, for the sympathy extended to us, for the floral offerings, the solos, and the words of consolation by Rev. Cachiaras, we are profoundly grateful.   Mr. & Mrs J.M.Walton

Kemper, George Allen    George A. Kemper Died Sunday Morning-Was Mayor of Howard Lake For Ten Years-Resident of Vicinity Since 1880. Settled in Victor ) (MN) by Rev. Cackiaras) George Allen Kemper, son of George W. and Lucinda Kemper, was born near Covington, Virginia, March 3rd, 1857.He lived there for for 23 years, until he moved to Victor township near Howard Lake. Here, in 1882, he and Miss Catherine Aritt were united in the holy bonds of matrimony and to this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Clara Tufford of Howard Lake and Mrs May Walton of Guernsey, Wyo. Just a few short years ago, on Feb. 24, 1930, Bro. Kemper was bereft of his life companion, the sweet, tender, home-loving woman-so gracious towards everyone with whom she came into contact. Every Lord’s day found Mr. Kemper in his accustomed seat near the window.  He became a part of the regular order of things to the church.  The children all will miss him, and we ourselves shall miss his familiar greeting and the half timid smile that always accomplished this hearty handshake. His faithfulness was an inspiration to the rest of us.  In Rev. 2:10 we read, “Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee the crown of life.” Besides being a member of the Church of Christ, Mr. Kemper was a member of the Ind pendent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias. He was a member of the Howard Lake school board for many years, served as chairman of the board of supervisors of Victor township and as deputy of inspector for Wright County for four years. He served as county commissioner of Wright county during the years of 1896 and 1897 and just lately completed a term of ten years as mayor of Howard Lake. A Minneapolis newspaper recently gave the following information:”One of the few small towns free of all bonded indebtedness is Howard Lake-this was accomplished during the administration of Mayor Allen Kemper.” Mr. Kemper had a heart ailment and this together with pneumonia, which culminated a brief illness, brought his life to a close at 7:30 on the morning of Jan. 24, 1937, at the age of 79 hears, 9 months and 27 days.  Had he lived until March 3rd he would have completed 80 years of this life. He leaves to mourn his death, besides his two daughters, one brother and three sisters, all of Covington, Va. Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ on Wednesday, Jan. 27th, at 2:30 p.m.  Interment was made in the Howard Lake cemetery beside his faithful wife.  Card of Thanks-We wish to express our sincere gratitude to our neighbors and friends for their kindness and sympathy during the sickness, death and burial of our father, the late G. A. Kemper-Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Tufford, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Walton. Howard Lake Herald, 2-4-1937.
