Carter, Clifton Parker  OBIT:  June 2, 1994:  Newport News-Clifton Parker Carter, 86, of Newport News, died Tuesday in Riverside Regional Hospital.  Mr. Carter was born Sept. 26, 1907, at Jordan Mines in Alleghany County, the son of the late William Lee and Della Wright Carter.  He was a retired sheet metal mechanic with Newport News Shipbuilding Co.  Mr. Carter was an employee of the former Industrial Rayon Corp. in Covington.  Surviving are his wife, Irona E. Carter of Newport News; his son, Donald P. Carter of Severna Park, MD; his grandson, Steven Carter of Severna Park, MD; one sister, Mrs. Lottie Critzer of Elk Ridge, MD; several nices and nephews.  Mr. Carter was preceded in death by a sister and a half-sister.   A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Addie Davis officiating.  Interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park.  Active pallbearers will be Sylvia Entisminger, Cody Entsminger, C. J. Entsminger, Jr., Carter Entsminger, Tad Robertson and Austin Critzer.  The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Arritt Funeral Home, and at other times, the family will be at the residence of Mrs. Flo Entsminger at 111 S. Carter, Edwin Ballard  OBIT:  July 10, 1985:  Mr. Edwin (Pete) Ballard Carter, Jr., 82, of Covington, died Tuesday at his home following a short illness.  Born September 21, 1902, in Alleghany County, he was the son of the late Edwin an America Jones Carter, Sr.  He was a member of Iron Hill Christian church, Snake Run.   Surviving are a son, Edwin (Bob) Carter III, Covington; three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Carter Williams, Miami, Florida, Mrs. Nancy C. Biggs, Hot Springs, and Mrs. Edwin (Susie) C. Surber, Covington; a brother, Ray K. Carter, Covington; two sisters, Mrs. Nora Poff, Covington, and Mrs. Ruby Blanchfield, White Sulphur Springs; and seven grandchildren. A grave side service will be held Friday at 11 am. at Iron Hill Cemetery, snake Run.  The family will receive friends at Shanklin Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

July 11, 1985: A grave side service for Mr. Edwin (Pete) Ballard Carter, Jr. will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in Pine Hill Cemetery on Snake Run with Rev. OBIT:  20 Oct. 1988-Eula Arritt:  Mrs. Eula Carter Arritt, 77, died Thursday morning.  She was the wife of Lacy A. Arritt of 624 Kline St.   Mrs. Arritt was born January 13, 1911 in Appomattox, a daughter of the late John William Carter and Louella Stanley Carter.   She was a member of the McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church, a member of Rebecca Lodge No. 8, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and had been a member of the Women of the Moose.   Other than her husband, Lacy A. Arritt, she is survived by one son, Berlyn Lacy Arritt of Hastings, Neb.; one half sister, Ada Lee of Lynchburg; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Arritt was preceded in death by one daughter, Helen Marie Johnson, in 1965; and one son, Aubury Ellis Arritt, in 1984.  A funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold E. Moffitt Jr. officiating.  Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 until 8:30 at the Loving Funeral Home.

 

BIT:  Oct. 7, 1994:  Former Covington Commissioner of Revenue, Evelyn Carter Arrington Faucette died Thursday at her residence on 104 Rosedale Ave.  Mrs. Faucette was selected Commissioner of the Revenue in 1964 and served in that office until she retired in1981.  She was a member of the State Commissioner of the Revenue Association.  Mrs. Faucette was born in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Jesse Payne Carter and Bertie Green Carter Carter.  She was the widow of the late George Lewis Arrington, who preceded her in death in 1940, and Robert Edward Faucette, who preceded her in death in 1981.  Mrs. Faucette was a member of Calvary Christian Church.  She was a former member of the church choir, Circle No. 2 and served on various committees.  She is survived by a son, James L. Arrington of Tampa, FL; three daughters, Peggy D. Arrington of Covington; Mrs. O. E. (Patsy) A. Parker of Covington; Mrs. Burton (Gay Nell) Parker of Hot Springs; two brothers, Mr. Oscar H. Carter of Eldorado Springs, Mo; Mr. Harold L. Carter of Hematite; two sisters,  Mrs.Pauline C. Noel of Coral Springs, FL; Mrs. Helen C. Carroll of Hampton; three grandchildren ,Mrs. William L. (Susan) Potter of Covington; Miss Molly C. Parker of Hot Springs; Miss Rebecca J. Parker of Richmond; one great grandchild, Kaitlyn Lacy Potter, at home; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Faucette was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Virginia C. Pearson, Mrs. Marie C.Via, Mrs. Annie C. Baker and three brothers, Jesse J. OBIT:  11 Nov 1985:  Mrs. Hattie Carter Silva, 90, of 805 N. Beverly St., died this morning in her home.   Born July 29, 1895 in Alleghany County she was the daughter of the late Robert Johnson Carter and Georgianna Biggs Carter.   Her husband Ira Cecil Silva preceded her in death in 1933.   Mrs. Silva operated a nursing service in her home during the 1930’s and was a former employee of the cafeteria staff at Rivermont Elementary School during World War II.  She was a member of Modern Woodmen of America and a charter member of the Covington Chapter 911 Women of the Moose.   Mrs. Silva is survived by one daughter, Mrs. George (Callie) Smoot, Covington.   Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.   A son, Harry L. Silva preceded her in death in 1984.   The funeral service will be held Wednesday 2 p.m. from Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clifton C. McCoy officiating.  Interment will be in Carter Cemetery at Iron Hill.   The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Arritt Funeral home.

OBIT:  18 June 1983-Salem:  Mrs. Hazel Carter Akers, 82, and a native of Alleghany County, died this morning.   Born April 27, 1901, she was a daughter of the late Edwin B. Carter, Sr. and Cordelia Jones Carter of Earlhurst.   She was the widow of Ott W. Akers who died in 1982.  Mrs. Akers spent most of her youth in Alleghany County and moved to Welch, WV, after her marriage. When her husband retired, the couple made their home in Salem.  She was living with her daughter in Boneta at the time of her death.   Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. James (Jessie Mae) Davis of Boneta; two brothers, Ray K. Carter and E. B. Carter, Jr., both of Covington; two sister, Mrs. Nora Poff of Covington and Mrs. W. L. Blanchefield, White Sulphur Springs; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.   Funeral arrangements are being handled by a Salem funeral home and are incomplete at this time.

 

Carter, Ira Randolph  OBIT:  Ira Randolph Carter of 4250 Ridge Road, Matthews, NC, died Tuesday following a sudden illness.  He had been a resident of Matthews for the past 15 years and had lived in the Covington area prior to that time.    Mr. Carter was born in Alleghany County, a son of the late Jesse Payne Carter and Bertie Green Carter.    He was a member of Covington Moose Lodge No. 610 and of Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and was employed as a security guard.    Mr. Carter is survived by three brothers, Jesse J. Carter, Covington, Oscar Carter, El Dorado Springs, MO, and Harold Carter, Hematite; three sisters, Mrs. R. E. (Evelyn) Fuacette, Covington, Mrs. William C. (Pauline) Noel, (remainder of obit missing).

 

 

Carter, Jesse Johnson Sr OBIT:  15 Jul 1991:  Hampton-Mr. Jesse Johnson Carter, Sr., 82, formerly of Hawthorne Street, died Saturday in Riverside Regional Convalescent Center, Newport News.  He was the husband of Amy Arbogast Carter.   Mr. Carter was born July 8, 1909 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Jesse P. Carter and the late Bertie Green Carter. He retired from Westvaco as a supervisor with 37 years with the company.  He had been a resident of this area all of his life until 1987.    Other than his wife he is survived by one son, Jesse Carter, Jr. of Newport News; two daughters, Mrs. Howard (June) Meador and Mrs. Jim (Nancy) Bishop, both of Glouchester; two brothers, Oscar H. Carter of Eldorado Springs, Missouri, Harold L. Carter of Hematite; four sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Faucette of Covington, Mrs. Helen Carroll of Hampton, Mrs. Pauline Noel of Coral Springs, FL, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.   A funeral service will be held at graveside in Iron Hill Cemetery, Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating.   The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 at Loving Funeral Home. 16 Jul 1991:

Carter, Jesse Payne  OBIT:  Monday Afternoon, Feb. 15, 1954, J. P. Carter, Commissioner of Revenue Died Sunday: Jesse Payne Carter, 71, Commissioner of Revenue of Alleghany County for the past 17 years, and well known in civic and fraternal orders, died in the University Hospital, Charlottesville, Sunday at 8:40 p.m. after an illness of several months.    Mr. Carter was a native of Alleghany County and -was born June 8, 1881, the son of Jesse A. and Lena Payne Harmon Carter, and spent his entire life in Alleghany County and Covington.    He was educated at Shenandoah College, now Bridgewater College.    He was first elected as Commissioner of Revenue of Alleghany County in November, 1935, and took office Jan. 1, 1936, and had served continuously since that time.  His efficient and courteous conduct of his office won for him great popularity throughout the are and on a number of occasions he was unopposed for reelection.  Previously he had served as Commissioner of Revenue of the Boiling Springs District at the time Alleghany County had commissioners for each district.    Mr. Carter was a charter member of the Covington Lions Club, and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Loyal Order of Moose, and the Iron Hill Church.  He had always been an ardent sportsman, and was a member of the Castile Hunt Club. His wife, who was the former Miss Bertie Carter of Sweet Chalybeate Springs, died in February, 1940.    Surviving are nine children, Mrs. Marie Via, who is Commissioner of Revenue of Covington, Ira Carter and Harold Carter of Covington, Jesse J. Carter, Sweeet Chalybeate, Oscar H. Carter, San Francisco, Ca, Mrs. Virginia Pearson and Mrs. Evelyn Arrington, Covington, Mrs. Pauline Noel, Staunton, and Mrs. Helen Carroll, Ft. Bragg, NC.  One daughter, Mrs. Annie Baker is deceased.    Funeral arrangements will be announced tomorrow.

 

OBIT:  Mrs. Marie Carter Via of 343 Hawthorne Street died Tuesday morning in University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.  She was Commissioner of the Revenue for the City of Covington.   Mrs. Via was born in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Jesse Payne and Bertie Green Carter and had been a resident of this community her entire life.  She was a charter member and clerk of Calvary Christian Church.   She had been Commissioner since 1953 when Covington became a city and prior to that had been deputy commissioner of the revenue for Alleghany County from 1936 until 1953, at the time her father, Jesse P. Carter was Alleghany County’s commissioner of the Revenue.  She had been elected in 1973 for another four-year term. She was a member of the State Association of Commissioners of the Revenue, a member of the Covington Woman’s Club and of the Business and Professional Women’s club.   Mrs. Via is survived by her husband William C. Via, Covington; a daughter, Mrs. Edgar W. (Dorcas) Roller, Avon Lake, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Faucette, Covington, Mrs. Pauline Noel, Coral Springs, Fla; and Mrs. Helen Carroll, Hampton; four brothers, Jesse J. Carter, Covington, Randolph Carter, Charlotte, NC, Oscar H. Carter, El Dorado Springs, OH. and Harold L. Carter, Hematite.  Two grandchildren, William E. Roller and Ann Michele Roller, also surive.    Two sisters Mrs. Virginia C. Pearson and Mrs. Annie C. Baker, preceded her in death.   The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the R. M. Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. John Caughron officiating. Interment will be in Carter Cemetery.   Active pallbearers will be A. B. Davis, Robert Reyns, Murray Young, Richard Edward Carter, Ray Heironimus, William F. Earehart, Jr., Garland Farmer and Edmund Revercomb.  Alternates will be F. E. Dillard, Ray Beazley and James Simpson.  Honorary pallbearers will be neighbors from Hawthorne and Wills Streets, and other friends attending the service.   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 8:30 o’clock tonight and requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Cancer Fund or to the church or charity of the donor’s choice.

 

OBIT:  Alleghany, VA, June 8-A large gathering of relatives, neighbors and friends assembled at the Carson residence in Alleghany Sunday afternoon to attend funeral services for Mrs. Mary Eliza Carson, 62 years old, who passed away suddenly last Thursday evening at 6:40 o’clock of hemorrhage.    The services were conducted by Rev. W. M. Jones, of Bluefield, WV, pastor of Iron Hill Christian Church, of which the deceased had long been a member, assisted by Rev. Jas. Gardner of Clifton Forge. About ten days before her sudden passing, Mrs. Carson attended Rebecca assembly in Charlottesville, VA, where the assembly degree was conferred upon her. Several distinguished officers of the order were present at the services.    Mrs. Carson, will be sadly missed in this community where she had resided almost 23 years.  Mrs. Carson was buried on her 40th wedding anniversary- and had remarked to several friends just the day before her death “that she only wished she could be beside her husband in the cemetery by Sunday.”    Active pallbearers were her six nephews, Delmas Carter, Cecil Carter, Richard Carter, Randolph Carter, Jesse Carter, Jr., and E. B. Carter, Jr.    Honorary pall-bearers were members of Rebecca Lodge, Jacquelin Smith, Elsie Southall, Helen Carter, Pauline Carter and Pauline Wolfe.    Interment was in the family cemetery on Snake Run.    Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Anna Crooks, Covington, three brothers, Jesse P. Carter, Covington, E. B. Carter, George Carter, Snake Run.

Also:  Mrs. Dave Carson is Dead at Alleghany:  Mrs. Mary Eliza Carson, age 63 years, widow of the late David W. Carson, of Alleghany, VA passed away very suddenly about 6:40 o”clock yesterday evening of a hemorrhage at her home at Alleghany Station.    Mrs. Carson’s passing came as a distinct shock to her neighbors in that community, as well as her many relatives and friends in Covington and the Sweet Springs Valley.    While Mrs. Carson had not enjoyed good health for some time prior to the death of her husband, which occurred on June 19, 1935, still, she was active in her many duties around her home and store, and had worked in her garden about an hour before her death.    Mrs. Carson had just backed her car out of the garage, preparing to attend a meeting of the Rebekah Lodge at Earlhurst, when she had a hemorrhage. Her neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Martin and Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Smith and family, and Mr. and Mrs. L. Pfadt, of Covington, who also were present, ran to her assistance, but Mrs. Carson sank to the ground in a couple of moments, and had breathed her last in less than five minutes.  The only word she spoke was when addressed by Mrs. Martin asking if anything hurt her.  She replied “no.”    Mrs. Carson was active in church work, and was a loyal member of the Ladies Aid Society, teacher of the adult class in Sabbath School, a devoted wife and friend and neighbor, who cheerful smile, kind words and many neighborly acts will be sadly missed by all who knew her.     Funeral services will be conducted from the residence in Alleghany Sunday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Mr. Gardner of Clifton Forge and Rev. Mr. Jones of Bluefield, officiating.    Active pallbearers will be her nephews. Interment will be beside her husband in the family cemetery on Snake Run.    Surviving relatives are one sister, Mrs. Annie Crooks, Mr. J. P. Carter, commissioner of revenue, Covington, Mr. E. B. Carter and Mr. George Carter of Snake Run.

 

OBIT:  14 Nov 1992:  Mrs. Mary Lee Carter Hubbard, 95, of Route 4, Covington, died Friday in Alleghany Regional Hospital.  She was the widow of William Benjamin Hubbard who preceded her in death in 1979.   She was born September 2, 1897 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Dr. Benjamin Lewis Carter and Clarissa Susan Persinger Carter.   Mrs. Hubbard was a member of the Benjamin Persinger memorial United Methodist Church, Ladies Sunday School Class and Ladies Circle.  She served as treasurer of the building fund and served on the board of trustees of Benjamin Persinger United Methodist Church and Persinger Memorial Cemetery.   She was a graduate of Covington High School and attended Longwood College. She taught Latin, English, and algebra at the Wet Ground School on Castle Run for several years before retiring. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lawrence Marjorie Carter McCarthy of Covington; and several nieces and nephews.   Mrs. Hubbard was preceded in death by two sisters, Raeburn Carter Stull and Margaret Ellen Carter Hepler.   A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Desper, the Rev. Riley Smith, Jr. and the Rev. Frederick LaMere officiating.   Interment will follow in Persinger Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Howard M. Persinger, Jr., Burton Dameron, W. Murray Young, Glen Hoke, Calvin P. Wright, James D. Snyder, Alan F. Persinger, and William C. “Bill” Via.  Alternate pallbearers will be Riley R. July 1977, Mrs. Carson:  Mary Maggie Carter Carson, 93, died Friday evening at her home.  She had been making her home with Mr. and Mrs. George Smoot at 805 N. Beverly Ave., Covington. She was born Dec. 19, 1884 at Earlehurst, a daughter of the late Robert Johnson Carter and Georganna Biggs Carter.  She was the widow of John A. Carson.  She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Christian Church.   She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hattie Silva, Covington, and a number of nieces and nephews.   The funeral service will be held Monday, 4 p.m. in the chapel of the Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. John Dunston officiating.  Interment will be in Iron Hill Cemetery, near Earlehurst.   The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

Carter, Melvin Howard Sr  OBIT:  Bumpass-Melvin Howard Carter, Sr. of Route 3, died Tuesday.  He was 80.    He was born April 25, 1910 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Lewis W. and Lottie D. Carter.    He was retired from the Building and Grounds Department of MVC-VCU Hospital in Richmond. He is survived by his wife Veda F. Carter; two sons, Melvin H. Carter, Jr. of Verona and Ronald Carter of Richmond; a daughter, R. June Reece of Eden, NC; a brother, Lester W. “Bud” Carter of Crozet; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.    A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hillcrest Cemetery, Louisa.    Lacy Funeral Home at Orchid is in charge of arrangements.

 

OBIT:  Monday, 24 Oct 1994:  Mrs. Nora Ellen Carter Poff, 97 of Brian Center Nursing Care, formerly Riverside Avenue and Route 3, Hematite, died Sunday in the Brian Center.  She was the widow of Henry Lewis Poff.   Mrs. Poff was born Aug. 1, 1897, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Edwin Ballard Carter and America Cordella Jones Carter.   She was a member of First Christian Church, Mrs. Poff was a former clerk with the Citizen Store and Montgomery Ward. She was a former school teacher at a small county school in Snake Run. She was a resident of this area all of her life.   Mrs. Poff is survived by a son, James Edwin Poff at Bridgeport, Ohio; a sister, Ruby Catherine Blanchfield of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Miss Jackie Poff of Clarksville, Tenn.; Miss Cathy Geho of Moundsville, W.Va.; Mr. Larid Poff of Fayetteville, N.C.; a great grandchild, Nicole Poff of Fayetteville, N.C.

 

Carter, Ray Kevil  OBIT:  21 Jul 1988, Ray Carter:  Ray Kevil Carter, 92 of Route 3, Covington, died Wednesday in the VA Medical Center in Salem.   He was born December 21, 1895 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Edwin Ballard Carter and American Cordelia Jones Carter.   Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his wife, Viva Stone Carter, in 1978.   He graduated from Lynchburg College in 1917 he operated several general merchandise stores in Kentucky and Virginia until the 1950s.  Mr. Carter was a retired farmer having farmed on Dunlap’s Creek for over 40 years.   Mr. Carter was a veteran of World War I serving with the U. S. Army. He was also a member of Moss Run Baptist Church and a 50 year member of the Lexington, KY, American Legion Post.   He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. H. W. (Carol) Fitzgerald, Jr., of Route 3, Covington; two granddaughters, Mrs. William (Linda) Boyd of Conyers, Ga and Mrs. Bobby (Laurie) Hosey of Route 3, Covington; two grandsons, Dave Fitzgerald of Route 1, Covington and Kevan Fitzgerald also of Route 1, Covington; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. William (Ruby) Blanchfield of White Sulphur Springs and Mrs. Nora Poff of Route 3, Covington.   Mr. Carter is preceded in death by five sisters and five brothers.   A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Carter Cemetery at Iron Hill with Rev. Mark Kouns officiating.   The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 pm. at Arritt Funeral Home.

Catlett, George Franklin Sr. OBIT:  A funeral service for George Franklin Catlett, Sr., 56, of 107 E. Prospect St., in Covington, will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Wright officiating.   Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.   Active pallbearers will be members of the Covington rescue Squad.   The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home.   The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Covington Rescue Squad, 435 W. Hawthorne St.

Mr. Catlett died Tuesday, November 16, 1999 at his residence.  He was the beloved husband of Jean Phillips Catlett.   He was born October 23, 1943 in Covington, a son of the late Louis “Bill” and Hattie Boggs Catlett.   Mr. Catlett was the past captain of the Covington Rescue Squad, having served from December 1997 until July of this year.  He joined the squad on March 4, 1993 as an emergency medical technician and prior to being named captain he served the squad as second lieutenant/vehicle maintenance.  Besides being active with the local organization, Mr. Catlett was also a certified EMTR evaluator for the State of Virginia Emergency Medical Services.  The squad honored him by naming him a lifetime member on July 1.   Besides service with the rescue squad, Mr. Catlett was a former member of the Hercules Ready Response Team. He retired from Hercules with 33 years of service.   He was a member of the Covington Wesleyan Church.   In addition to his wife of 33 years, Jean Phillips Catlett, he is survived by two sons, Ricky Lee Sr. and George F. Catlett, Jr., both of Covington; three grandchildren,  Ricky Lee, Jr., Jeana Lee and Jacob Catlett, all of Covington; a brother, David Louis Catlett of Covington; a special sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen Reynolds; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, and his special family at the Covington Rescue Squad.   Mr. Catlett was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Catlett Smith, in 1990; and an infant brother, Billy T. Childs, Arnold  OBIT:  11 Jan 1991-Lake City, FL-Arnold Childs, 71, of Route 10, Box 485, Lake City, Fla., died Thursday in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., after a brief illness. Mr. Childs was a veteran of World War II.  He was a retired automobile mechanic and was affiliated with the Church of God during his lifetime.   He is survived by his wife, Raeburn Childs; seven daughters, Norma Johnson of Atlanta, S  via McLaren of Gainesville, Fla., Loretta Phillips of Melbourne, Fla., Judy Jerrell of White Springs, Fla., Lottie Hill of Gainesville, Fla., Dawn Crews of Tallahassee, Fla., and Nanette Childs of Lake City, Fla.; one son, Albert (Yogi) Childs of Logans Port, La.; one sister, Juanita Halterman of Arlington; one brother, Lawrence Childs of Oceanside, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.   The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Sherill-Guerry Funeral Home in Lake City, Fla. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.   The family will receive friends this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 a tthe funeral home, 616 S. Marion St., Lake City, Fla.

 

OBIT:  30 Oct 1984-Mrs. Besie V. Childs Burch, 94, of 4627 Eton Road, SW, Roanoke, formerly of 211 E. Beech St., Covington, died at her home Sunday morning.  She was the widow of William Warner Burch Sr. who preceded her in death in 1947.   Mrs. Burch was born April 7, 1890, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late William Allen Childs and Emma Tinsley Walker Childs, an was the last surviving member of their family of 12 children. She had made her home in this community until four years ago when she moved to Roanoke to make her home with her daughter Mrs. Wiley (Winifred) Jennings.   Mrs. Burch was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Carpenter Bible Class and the Women of the Church.   Surviving are two sons, William Warner Burch, Jr., Roanoke, and Jack N. Burch, Covington; three daughters, Mrs. Wiley (Winnifred) Jennings, Roanoke, Mrs. Julian (Madeline) Coffman, Harrisonburg, and Mrs. Robert (Juanita) Garrt, Huntsville, Alabama; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  A son, Edward Allen Burch, preceded her in death in 1982.   The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. W. Murray Page officiating, assisted by Dr. James Allison of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jay Coffman, David Burch, Gregory Garrett, Carl Maddox, Arch Garner and Tom Clarke, Gregory Ergenbright will be an alternate.  Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.   The family will receive friends at Loving Funeral Home from 7 until 8:30 p.m. this evening and at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jack N. Clark, Frank F. Jr  OBIT:  Mr. Frank Clark, Jr., Retired electrician:  Mr. Frank F. Clark, Jr. 77, of 3415 Rushing Road, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Columbia Augusta Medical Center.   The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road, with the Rev. Colin Dacus officiating.  Burial will be in a Hillcrest Memorial Park.   Mr. Clark, a native of Inez, KY., had retired from Federal Paper Board as an electrician.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, where served as a paratrooper, and was a member of American Legion Post No. 205.  He was a member of Senior Friends and was a Methodist.   Survivors include his wife, Ellen D. Clark, a son, Frank F. Clark III, Augusta; a sister Esther Outlaw, Norfolk, Va; and one grandchild.   Pallbearers will be  Tom Glassburn, Walt Haskins, Tony Patterson, Jack Ballard, Bill Maxwell and Ken Kimberly.   Honorary pallbearers will be members of the electrical shop of International Paper.   Memorials may be made to Mann Memorial United Methodist Church, 2705 Milledgeville Road, Augusta, GA 30904.   Friends may call at the residence.   The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

 

Mrs. Hattie Clarkson McClung, aged 74 years of Portsmouth, VA, formerly of Union, died Friday, June 25, 1982, in a Norfolk, VA hospital after a long illness.   Born Oct. 12, 1906 at Paint Bank, VA, she was a daughter of the late Calvin Lee and Esta Wolfe Clarkson.  Mrs. McClung was a retired registered nurse and a member of the Union United  Methodist Church.   She was preceded in death by her husband, Golden H. McClung in 1969.   Survivors include one daughter, Sarah M. Walski of Portsmouth, VA; one son, John M. H. McClung of Davis, Ca; two sisters, Loula C. Holdren of Union and Edith Matney of Glen Lyn, VA; and two grandchildren.   Funeral services were held Monday in the Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home chapel in Union with the Rev. Dallas Forren officiating.  Burial followed in Frankford Cemetery at Frankford.

 

Clarkson, John B.  OBIT:  John B. Clarkson:  John Berlin Clarkson, aged 64 years of Gap Mills, died at his home Tuesday, June 10, 1980.   Born in Hinton, August 15, 1915, he was a son of the late Calvin Lee and Esta Wolfe Clarkson.   Mr. Clarkson was a farmer.   He was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Stevens Clarkson on December 16, 1977.   Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Hattie McClung of Gap Mills, Mrs. Lula Holdren of Union and Mrs. Edith Mainey of Florence, S.C. Funeral services were held Friday in the Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home chapel in Union.  Burial followed in Green Hill Cemetery in Union.

 

OBIT:  23 Dec 1987-Richmond-Claudine Childs Caddy, 76, formerly of Covington, died Tuesday in Plylers Nursing Home in Richmond.   She was born July 16, 1911 in Alleghany County, the daughter of the late Henry Allen and Rowena Lewis Childs.   Mrs. Caddy was a resident of the community for most of her life.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.  The Pines Garden Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Covington Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Alleghany Historical Society.   For a number of years, she and her late sister, Helen Childs, had catered and baked cakes for the people in the community.   She was preceded in death by her husband, Major Edward W. Caddy, Jr.   Mrs. Caddy is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James (Ann) Morgan of Richmond; two grand-children, Steven Morgan and Belinda Morgan both of Richmond; one sister, Mrs. Homer (Ruby) Dodd of Roanoke; two brothers, William S. Childs of Arlington Heights, ILL, and James Norman Childs of Raleigh, NC; several nieces and nephews including William F. Earhart of Rt. 2, Valley Ridge, and Allen M. Earehart of Richmond.   A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. from Arritt Funereal Home Chapel with the Rev. James A. Rohne officiating, assisted by the Rev. William M. Harriss, Jr.   Pallbearers will be Frederick J. Brown, Gene Lee, Robert Montgomery, Robert G. Smith, Henry Tingler, G. C. Fawley, Ed Abbott, and Frank Noel.   Alternate pallbearers will be Roscoe Armentrout and E. C. Bowyer.   Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.   The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William F. OBIT:  Mildred Childs Wilson, 77, of 905 Potts Creek Rd., died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.    She was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Eagle Rock, a daughter of the late James and Mary Ellen Riddlebarger Childs.   Mrs. Wilson was a former employee of the Industrial Rayon Plant, Childs’ Jewelry Store and J. C. Penney. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.   Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Benjamin L. Wilson of Covington; a son, Steven W. Wilson of Blacksburg; a granddaughter, Millie Wilson of Covington; a brother, Lewis Childs of Covington; two sisters, Josephine Powell of Covington and Sadie King of Camp Springs, Md; several nieces and nephews.   A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William M. Hartsfield officiating.  Entombment will be at Alleghany Memorial Park.   Friends may pay their respects any time at Arritt Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends Tuesday at Arritt Funeral Home from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
